The study of Gemini surfactants first began in the 1970s. In 1971, bunton et al. synthesized a family of novel amphiphilic molecules in the order of long hydrocarbon chain, ion head group, bonding group, second ion head group, and so on. The second hydrocarbon chain was used as a phase transfer catalyst, and it was found to have higher catalytic efficiency than ordinary cationic surfactants.
